Farm Tour Friday 2-3-23

See you later January, hello February!

The mighty Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil told us all that we will be having 6 more weeks of winter this week.  I could have said that just by looking out our windows. A fun fact, we are located less than 50 miles west of the great groundhog's home.

We are not letting that stop us.  Our employees came back to work this week and they were ready to roll.  Another two weeks and they will have us pretty current. We were able to get most of our ranunculus planted, watered, stakes put up and frost blankets for the newly planted sections.

What are frost blankets?  They are a heavier weight version of an insect cover.  Even though our plants are in our high tunnels, they still need to be protected from extreme cold temps.  They are covered every night and uncovered if we are to have a sunny day.

Today was only a high of 14 degrees F,  They were not uncovered! Most of our houses are unheated.  That is changing soon. A new heater was installed in our large house and the propane tank was delivered.  Now we just have to have patience until the tank is filled with propane. When it is turned on and we will start lots and lots of flower seeds.

We have run out of room in our small propagation house.  Our small propagation house is only 750 square feet and we are adding an additional 1,760 square feet for our starts.

Dahlia tubers waiting to be divided in storage.

A clump of dahlia tubers divided.

When we weren't planting spring flowers we were dividing dahlias.  Everyday we start out the morning with a dahlia dividing session until it warms up and the sun is shining.  I think we are all dividing dahlias in our sleep at this point.

Have a great weekend!
