Year in Review Part 2
May was busy with transplanting tens of thousands of seedlings and dahlia tubers into the fields. Our team worked hard to get everything plants quickly. Mother's Day flowers were beautiful, and The Flower Shack was full of bouquets and vegetable seedlings for our customers' gardens. We were harvesting more each week for our grocery store customers, too.
June was hot, and we finished up the main push of planting and started on the second round of many flowers. I continued to seed 10,000 sunflowers every week, and we waited for the field flowers to grow.
July was hot and dry! We worked on irrigation every day, watering our important crops like dahlias, lisianthus, and crops in the high tunnels. We felt like we were only giving our flowers a sip of water each time. We finished planting our high tunnels for fall production. The field flowers were starting to bloom more, and many grocery store bouquets were being made and delivered all throughout the Pittsburgh region.
August continued the hot dry spell. We changed our tactic on watering, the fields responded, and started blooming in abundance. The team and I were focused on harvesting thousands of stems every week and making bouquets for our grocery store customers as fast as we could. The dahlias were finally starting to produce, and we had loads of lisianthus. We finally felt like we were back on track.
