Year in Review Part 3

September we were swimming in flowers. The fields exploded with color, and our team was harvesting as fast as they could. We made thousands of grocery store bouquets with all of those beautiful flowers. The dahlia field was gorgeous, and we had several U-Pick events in the dahlias. It was a busy, busy month.

Celosia was a wonderful crop this fall. Probably one of the best in many years. Every celosia stem went into our mixed bouquets.

Scabiosa Focal Scoop was a crop that we added back into our line up after a few years of not growing it. It added a nice sparkle to our market bouquets.

Cafe au Lait dahlia, one of my absolute favorite dahlias we grow, was a great producer of flowers during September.

Our team is an amazing group of women that work hard and care about growing the highest quality flowers for our customers. We couldn’t do it without this incredible small but mighty team. Only a few of our team members are in the photo. We also have a couple of year round part time and additional summer time help.

The Flower Shack was still going strong! We had so many flowers for our community and they responded by coming out to the farm every weekend to purchase their fresh bouquets.

October was the last push for field flowers before the frost. Then we started digging dahlia tubers. We continued to make grocery store bouquets from our crops in the high tunnels, and the heirloom mums really started to shine.

The high tunnel crops were starting to bloom just in time for the field flowers to come to an end for the season. This pink celosia was a perfect addition to our season extension bouquets.

The field flowers were giving it all they had right be for our killing frost. We harvested thousands of stems to make sure we did waste anything. This feather celosia was a great crop for us this season.

Our team is making grocery store bouquets. We had an abundance of beautiful flowers.

Frost came to our farm mid-October. The field crops, especially the dahlias can’t handle a frost. They gave us one more beautiful show before they went into their winter slumber. Seeing the frost covered dahlias on the morning of the first killing frost is always a special moment of the season.

Our heirloom mums started to bloom and it was perfect timing to keep us in fresh flowers. This Chrysanthemum is Moira, a favorite of ours.

We continued to deliver our bouquets to grocery stores. These lovely bouquets include eucalyptus, celosia, marigolds, salvia, and mums.

November, we finished up with our fresh flowers for the season. We have tried to have fresh flowers through November, and this year, our wonderful team made that a reality. Our mum crop was amazing and helped make our bouquets abundant.

We finished digging our dahlia tubers. This is a huge task every fall and our team works hard to get them all dug. The dahlia tubers looked great!

The heirloom chrysanthemums continued to bloom and they were absolutely gorgeous. This Coral Charm mum is always a favorite.

These were the last of the seasons bouquets. We were so happy to have fresh flowers into November. These lovely bouquets include mums, eucalyptus, salvia, and marigolds.

We packed all of the dahlia tubers away for the winter into our walk-in cooler. I have found that the cooler keeps them at a good temperature for storing them over the winter months.

At the end of the month we started making our holiday evergreen decorations. These are The 4 Daughter’s Collection we offered to our local customers this holiday season.

December was filled with hundreds of evergreen wreaths, digging up our mum mother plants, planting tulips, and putting the farm to bed for the winter. Our team did an amazing job!

Here is a cart full of evergreen wreaths that are ready for delivery to our local florists. Our team made hundreds of evergreen wreaths. We harvest all of our evergreens locally and it is beautiful Fraser Fir and Concolor Fir.

The team finished up planting the outdoor tulips before our winter break. We plant our tulips in a temporary raised bed.

The last big task of the year was digging up and potting up all of our heirloom mum mother plants. These mum mother plants will live in our heated greenhouse all winter. There are a lot of them!

This year was full of growth, and I can’t wait to see what the new year has in store for our small but mighty flower farm!
